Thoughts about Complexity, Mental Growth and Simplification

Analytic thoughts about complexity
So complexity refers to a system/process, it is an accoumlation of many components/related elements.
One thing without any sub-components can not be complex. Because it’s just one.
So in order to be complex it needs many components or many consequences related to the elements within the system.
Overwhelming complexity results in a felt failure or creates an spark of motivation which we call „Interest“, the mental crossroad is a result of not directly being able to grasp the idea or not being able to mentally surround the system/process.

The observer’s reaction towards complexity
Depending on the observer this can be interpreted as challenge to complete the mental picture or turn away from it. The observer behavior is dependent on past experiences and their outcome. If the person is used/told to being able to grasp it or not. The second factor is the relevance of the system/process for future encountered events/happenings. Some observers mainly focus on forming own mental structures of an complex system/process in expectation to get a future gain/benefit out it. This can lead to disappointment which can result in future avoidance of such effort.
The third factor is the urge to play, mental forming of a complex system/process without having future expectation towards an outcome of the the activity. These attributes coupled with the unbroken natural urge to play is the most fluent and natural way of growth, growth defined as the accumulation of own mental models of many complex systems/processes which connect/relate to other previous self constructed images of complex system/processes, which may before even have been generally seen as separate/unrelated, this is what we call innovation. It requires a mind of no expectations and regrets and a playful attitude towards the most complex systems/processes.

Unifying Simplification
An easy way to simplify something is to hide the system/process behind a mask/symbol. Create a single element out of it, which some one can more easily save within her/his own mental library. All complexity is hidden behind this mask/symbol and can easily be accessed within one’s own mind. The whole depth and it’s details do not need to be known since the overall concept is grasped.

This freedom of deciding if one wants to dig deeper into the plentyful connections and levels of complexity is what makes it more attractive to the observer. It gained the possibility to be fun/play.

Hanging around in the park and getting things done

David Zobrist 2014 April
Hi!
So my second game for iPhone is apple approved and will be automatically released 23rd of April. Let’s see how everything rolls:)
This weekend I went out with my girlfriend for some celebration and enjoyed Berlin and the beautiful spring weather in the park.

On monday I gonna brainstorm and start sketch the first update ideas for Sha Cat. What features will increase the attractivity of the app for new users? What will people gonna keep on playing? What could make them spread the word to their friends? But I gonna do all of this totally chilled in the park, letting go a little of this strong temptation to try to control everything and start more enjoying what I actually do. Since the main purpose of the whole things is exactly that.

Let’s create!

Virtual reality in the hands of Facebook

So Facebook bought „Occulus rift“ for 2 billion dollars. Is that a good or bad?
occulus

What the hell is occults rift?
„Occulus rift“ is a virtual reality device, 3d glasses as you may now it from the movie „The Lawnmower Man“.

These high end technology goggles enable you to emerge into 3d worlds by gaining a 360 degree view. Which translates your own head motions smoothly as never before. It all started as an indie kick starter project and quickly gained a lot of attention by dozen’s of investors and believers.

I heard about that virtual reality stuff before..didn’t really worked out..
Occulus rift obviously is not the first of its kind but in past the technology behind the 3d glasses was not efficient enough to guarantee a fluent conversion of head position into the virtual world. Now it is.

My personal experience with this magical new device
So there are a few demo’s I could try out a few months ago, one of them was sitting in a roller coaster.

I must say it is an trip worth having, you totally are thrown in this other world. Except you don’t yet have the wind blowing into your face..
The ability to look around fluently in each direction you want, with seeing no way out of the virtual world creates a believable world in which you can immerse yourself.

What ever it does not yet work for the traditional type of games, where you move with mouse and keyboard in a 3d space, simply because your head is not used to receive movement commands from your hands. You will get nauseous.. I didn’t believed that (because I’m tough) but after around 10 minutes I had to stop it.

I see an early successful future for experiences where you don’t move, like siting on a chair while things around you happens or you are moving automatically as for example sitting in a mine car driving through a spooky gold mine, or being placed in a wooden cracky boat slowly cursing through a Jungle swamp.

Facebook owns it now!
First of all, for most gamers this sounds horrible because Facebook is the enemy. Farmville and similar games are more considered to be business models with game elements then the other way round and shine a corrupted light on our beloved games. Also Facebook appears like a big predator eating the innocent crowdsourced baby, which was just about to to do his first steps.

But to be honest if I would have the money I would have bought them too, everything else would be stupid. Think about the potential in the hands of Facebook, ok the device is cool but it is also nerdy as hell. You would never reach the mass market as effective as Facebook potentially can.

I look forward for any kind of virtual reality experiences/trips.
